Job Overview

The University of Rwanda – College of Science and Technology (UR-CST) is inviting applications from qualified and experienced candidates for 19 academic and Academic & Research Support positions within the School of Engineering and Training Workshop and the School of Science.

The recruitment covers teaching, research, laboratory, and technical workshop positions across several areas of engineering and science.

1. School of Engineering and Training Workshop

The School of Engineering consists of the following departments:

  • Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering
  • Mechanical and Energy Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The School also works with Centres of Excellence including:

  • African Centre of Excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development (ACE-ESD)
  • Centre of Excellence in Transport Planning and Logistics
  • Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering

The Training Workshop provides practical training through five main sections:

  • Masonry
  • Welding
  • Electrical
  • Electronics
  • Mechanical

Assistant Lecturer – Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • An MSc in Control Systems, Automation Systems, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Control, Mechatronics, or a closely related field from a recognized higher learning institution.
  • Strong academic and practical knowledge of control systems, industrial automation, instrumentation, electrical systems, or related areas.
  • Familiarity with engineering software, simulation applications, programming tools, and laboratory equipment.
  • Good teaching, communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Research work, publications, conference participation, or relevant professional experience will be an added advantage.

Key Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of control and automation technologies.
  • Ability to develop and implement practical engineering solutions.
  • Understanding of PLCs, SCADA, instrumentation, industrial automation, and control systems where relevant.
  • Ability to use engineering simulation and programming tools.
  • Strong teaching and student-support skills.
  • Research and analytical abilities.
  • Good technical writing and communication.
  • Ability to collaborate with professionals from different disciplines.
  • Interest in innovation and continuous professional development.

Main Duties

  • Teach undergraduate and, where applicable, postgraduate courses in the candidate's area of specialization.
  • Develop course materials, lecture notes, practical guides, tutorials, presentations, and other learning resources.
  • Conduct lectures, tutorials, laboratory activities, demonstrations, and practical sessions.
  • Prepare and administer examinations, continuous assessments, practical tests, and other student evaluations.
  • Assess assignments, examinations, laboratory reports, projects, and other academic work according to University procedures.
  • Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students.
  • Supervise student projects, dissertations, internships, and practical training.
  • Participate in curriculum development, review, and improvement.

Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer – Mechanical and Energy Engineering

Requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Automation, or another closely related field.
  • Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals recognized by the University of Rwanda.

Lecturer

  • Minimum of 2 publication points.
  • Teaching experience is not mandatory but is an advantage.
  • A strong academic background and relevant industry or postdoctoral research experience are desirable.

Senior Lecturer

  • Minimum of 3 years of university teaching experience as a Senior Lecturer at a recognized higher learning institution.
  • Evidence of successfully supervising at least two Master's students to completion.
  • Minimum of 10 publication points, with three obtained since the previous promotion.

Associate Professor

  • At least 5 years of university teaching experience as an Associate Professor or equivalent.
  • Evidence of successfully supervising doctoral students to completion.
  • Minimum of 10 publication points, with three earned since the last promotion.
  • Demonstrated contribution to research, community engagement, and academic leadership.

Main Duties

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Mechanical and Energy Engineering.
  • Supervise students undertaking projects, dissertations, and practical assignments.
  • Participate in curriculum development and improvement.
  • Prepare teaching resources and laboratory manuals.
  • Conduct research and publish results in recognized academic journals.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Support consultancy and knowledge-transfer activities.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the relevant University authorities.

Training Workshop Positions

Electrical Workshop Technician

Job Classification: 5.II

Reports To: Director of Workshop

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in repair and maintenance.
  • Experience using specialized equipment and related software/hardware is desirable.
  • Knowledge of relevant workshop procedures and work practices is an added advantage.

Mechanical Workshop Technician – Welding, Appropriate Technology and Machine Tools Technology

Job Classification: 5.II

Reports To: Director of Workshop

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in repair and maintenance.
  • Experience with relevant specialized equipment and software/hardware is desirable.

General Workshop Responsibilities

Workshop technicians will provide technical assistance, maintain equipment and facilities, perform minor repairs, prepare tools and materials for practical activities, support students and staff, maintain workshop records, monitor workshop assets, and assist with practical and hands-on training.

2. School of Science

The School of Science consists of:

  • Department of Biology
  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Mathematics
  • Department of Physics

The School also collaborates with the Centre of Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management, particularly through the Department of Biology.

  • Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer – Bioprocess Engineering, Biology
  • Laboratory Technician – Conservation Biology
  • Laboratory Technician – Bioprocess Engineering
  • Lecturer – Mathematics

  • Assistant Lecturer – Physics

Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer – Bioprocess Engineering

Department: Biology

Academic Qualification

Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent professional Doctorate in Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Industrial Biotechnology, or a related discipline.

Associate Professor Requirements

Candidates should have:

  • At least 3 years of teaching experience as a Senior Lecturer at a recognized higher learning institution.
  • At least four publication points obtained since the previous promotion.
  • At least two of the required publications should be in journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, or AJOL.
  • Successfully supervised at least one PhD student to completion.
  • At least one research grant awarded while serving as PI or Co-PI, with combined funding of at least 50 million RWF.

Senior Lecturer Requirements

Candidates should have:

  • At least 3 years of teaching experience after obtaining a PhD.
  • At least three publication points obtained since the last promotion.
  • At least two publications meeting the requirements stated in the advertisement.

Main Duties

  • Teach Bioprocess Engineering and Biotechnology courses and related academic activities.
  • Support the development of new competency-based curricula.
  • Participate in research, consultancy, and knowledge-transfer activities.
  • Perform teaching and other academic responsibilities assigned by the Head of Department.
  • Participate in continuous professional development.

Assistant Lecturer – Physics

Number of Positions: 1

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Physics from a recognized institution. Preference may be given to candidates undertaking doctoral studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence in Physics.
  • Potential to teach and conduct research in higher education.
  • Research publications, research-project participation, or other research output is an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of laboratory teaching and experimental methods.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with academic or research expertise in Nuclear Science and Technology, including Nuclear Physics, Radiation Physics, Medical Physics, Nuclear Energy Systems, Radiation Protection and Safety, Nuclear Instrumentation, or related areas.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in teaching Physics courses.
  • Carry out academic duties assigned by the Head of Department.
  • Take part in continuous professional development.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Participate in research, consultancy, and knowledge-transfer activities.
  • Conduct research that contributes to the advancement of the discipline, teaching methods, or applied research.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Head of Department, Dean, College Principal, Deputy Vice Chancellor, or Vice Chancellor.
