Rwanda salary guide: what jobs actually pay in 2026
Monthly pay ranges by role and sector in Rwanda, what shifts a salary up or down, and how to negotiate without guessing.
Salary information in Rwanda is unusually hard to find, which is exactly why job seekers either guess too low or bluff too high. The ranges below are indicative guidance drawn from how roles are commonly advertised and filled. Treat them as a starting point for negotiation, not as a surveyed statistic, and always adjust for the specific employer.
How to read these figures
All amounts are monthly gross in Rwandan francs, and all are for roles based in Kigali. Provincial roles sit meaningfully below Kigali for the same title, often by 20 to 40 percent, particularly in hospitality and administration. A range covers entry to competent professional level; the top of the range usually needs specialist skills or supervisory responsibility.
Negotiating power tracks scarcity. Anything with a certification requirement moves faster than anything without.
Professional and technical roles
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| IT support engineer | 450,000 – 900,000 |
| Systems / cloud administrator | 700,000 – 1,500,000 |
| Software developer | 800,000 – 1,800,000 |
| Civil engineer | 600,000 – 1,400,000 |
| Electrical engineer | 600,000 – 1,400,000 |
| Mechanical engineer | 500,000 – 1,200,000 |
| Data analyst | 600,000 – 1,200,000 |
| Quantity surveyor | 500,000 – 1,100,000 |
| Telecoms engineer | 600,000 – 1,300,000 |
Finance and accounting
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Accounts assistant | 280,000 – 450,000 |
| Accountant (qualified) | 500,000 – 900,000 |
| Senior accountant / controller | 900,000 – 1,600,000 |
| Finance manager | 1,400,000 – 2,500,000 |
| Audit associate | 350,000 – 600,000 |
| Credit or loan officer (microfinance) | 300,000 – 700,000 |
ACCA or CPA membership is the single strongest lever in this field. It typically moves an accountant from the middle of the accountant range toward the controller range within two to three years.
Human resources
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| HR assistant | 250,000 – 400,000 |
| HR officer / generalist | 400,000 – 700,000 |
| HR manager | 800,000 – 1,500,000 |
| Talent acquisition specialist | 500,000 – 900,000 |
CIPD or IHRM membership matters. Multilingual candidates are consistently paid at the top of these ranges because most organisations serve French, English and Kinyarwanda-speaking workforces.
Education
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Primary school teacher | 250,000 – 400,000 |
| Secondary subject teacher | 350,000 – 600,000 |
| Head of department | 600,000 – 900,000 |
| School principal | 900,000 – 1,600,000 |
| University lecturer | 500,000 – 1,100,000 |
Healthcare
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Registered nurse | 350,000 – 650,000 |
| Clinical officer | 400,000 – 750,000 |
| General practitioner | 700,000 – 1,500,000 |
| Laboratory scientist | 350,000 – 700,000 |
| Pharmacy technician | 300,000 – 550,000 |
Registration with the relevant professional council is mandatory before you can practise, and employers verify it. Do not apply until yours is current.
Customer service and BPO
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Customer service agent | 180,000 – 350,000 |
| Team leader | 350,000 – 550,000 |
| Quality analyst | 400,000 – 650,000 |
This is the largest entry-level category in Rwanda and it hires continuously, which makes it a realistic route in while you qualify for something better. Night shift and language allowances often add meaningfully. English fluency is what separates candidates here more than anything else.
Hospitality and tourism
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Restaurant staff | 150,000 – 280,000 |
| Housekeeping / kitchen | 160,000 – 300,000 |
| Front office / reception | 220,000 – 400,000 |
| Supervisor | 400,000 – 700,000 |
| Restaurant or hotel manager | 700,000 – 1,400,000 |
| Tour guide | 250,000 – 500,000 |
Musanze, Rubavu and the Kigali hotel market pay differently from each other. Lake resort and tourism roles can add service charge and tips, which are worth asking about explicitly.
Transport and logistics
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Driver (light vehicle) | 180,000 – 350,000 |
| Driver (heavy / truck) | 220,000 – 400,000 |
| Logistics coordinator | 300,000 – 600,000 |
| Warehouse supervisor | 350,000 – 650,000 |
| Procurement specialist | 400,000 – 750,000 |
Several of the largest logistics employers in Rwanda sit at the Kigali Logistics Platform, and roles tied to customs documentation and inventory systems pay well because the skills are scarce.
Retail, marketing and sales
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Retail assistant | 150,000 – 280,000 |
| Sales representative | 200,000 – 450,000 plus commission |
| Marketing assistant | 250,000 – 500,000 |
| Digital marketing specialist | 400,000 – 800,000 |
| Brand or account manager | 500,000 – 1,000,000 |
Always establish the commission structure in writing before accepting a sales role, and treat an employer who will not discuss it as a warning.
Agriculture
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Field supervisor | 250,000 – 500,000 |
| Agronomist | 400,000 – 900,000 |
| Irrigation technician | 300,000 – 600,000 |
| Estate manager | 600,000 – 1,300,000 |
Most large estates in the Eastern Province offer accommodation and transport, which is worth adding to the calculation when comparing offers.
Construction
| Role | Indicative monthly range |
|---|---|
| Site supervisor | 300,000 – 600,000 |
| Site engineer | 450,000 – 900,000 |
| Project manager | 900,000 – 1,800,000 |
| Site manager | 1,200,000 – 2,500,000 |
What actually raises your pay
Ranked by how much difference they make across the market:
- A recognised professional certification in your field. This is the biggest single lever.
- Specialised technical skills that are genuinely scarce locally: cloud platforms, structural analysis, financial modelling, specific ERP systems.
- Language combinations. Trilingual capability is valuable in every sector and decisive in several.
- Formal management experience, including supervising staff and owning a budget.
- Experience inside your target sector, even if the employer is smaller.
- Postgraduate qualifications. Useful, but they pay off more slowly than certification and applied experience.
How to negotiate without guessing
Arrive with a researched range and know what the full package is worth. Base salary is only part of the total: transport allowance, mobile phone allowance, medical and insurance cover, annual bonus and any performance pay can add a significant proportion. Ask explicitly what the package includes, because "the salary" is rarely the whole number.
Anchor slightly above your target if you can justify it, and always give a range rather than a single figure. State your number once, calmly, then stop talking. The person across the table is the one who should move first.
Most importantly: do not accept the first offer if you have not asked. The gap between the initial offer and the final agreed number is normal and expected, and asking about it costs nothing.
